If You Can Dream It, You Can Do It
~ Walt Disney
This quote has shaped my life as it is today. It may sound flippant, but having spent the last 14 years under the shadow cast by my eating disorder, I have found myself in temporary euphoria over my latest dream, only to become shattered when I prevented myself from bringing it to fruition. This cycle only led to fuel my self hatred, I was constantly letting myself down. Until I came across this quote. I began to realise that If I did have the capacity to dream it, I had the capacity to do it, it was only me that was putting up the barriers. If I could override my self limitations, anything was possible. I believe that whilst you have no control over your beginning, only you control your ending. This is where GourmetGlow was born.
I’ve been passionate about food all of my life. The memories and emotions it evokes through flavours and aromas has long fascinated me. It is essential to life and has the power to bring people together, but as I have learnt, it can also pull people apart. Food has been my downfall, but also my salvation. In the depths of my illness, when life was out of my control, the only thing I could control was my food, it became an unhealthy obsession. Now, I’ve turned that 180 degrees and it is more than a healthy obsession, it has shaped my new, prosperous and happy life.
When I came across heathylivinglondon.com, I was drawn to their ethos ‘Strong not Skinny’ and it resonated. I wanted to be fit and able again, able to get out of bed without pain, able to walk more than 5 minutes without becoming exhausted, able to lift pots and pans in the kitchen for myself. I began to see food as nourishment, not only for the body, but for the soul. But I needed the right food.
By researching in depth the nutritional value of foods I have been able to heal myself both physically and emotionally. My hair is glossy, my skin is clear, my nails grow and I’m bursting with energy. I’ve learnt that your body is intelligent, it tells you exactly what you need, you just need to harness the power to listen and react to it.
This is where GourmetGlow can help you. My aim is to diminish peoples’ anxieties around cooking and eating food, moreover, incentivise them to create and nourish themselves. Our choices are governed too much by the media and we become lost in a world of Do’s and Don’ts. I believe that by giving people more positive self-awareness, they can begin to act on their bodies’ messages.
Foods that are not processed or chemically altered lie at the root of this. Good, nutritious foods need little intervention to sing for themselves. Anyone can cook, you just need some guidance and self-belief. I aim to prove that it’s just as quick to rustle up a nutritious curry as it is to phone the local takeaway and get a delivery.
Having a whole host of food intolerances has forced me to research alternative nutrient sources. I believe that the body can become burdened with modern day allergens such as wheat and dairy, and can function better without them. But there needn’t be a compromise on flavour or accessibility, indeed, people without intolerances love the food I create. This has made me empathetic with people who do suffer allergies and intolerances and my aim is to guide them so that it need not be an issue in their life.
In essence this is what ‘clean eating’ means to me. Not placing your body under the unnecessary burden of refined foods. It is not by any means a restrictive label, in fact, it encourages people out of their trapped way of eating and opens a whole new spectrum of flavours and textures. It nourishes the body with nutritionally dense foods in a way that makes the nutrients readily available to be used in metabolism, giving you the highest possible proportion out of the foods you consume. You will literally ‘glow’ from the inside out.
This practice, I believe, can negate the need for certain medications in some instances, for example reducing blood pressure. By making a few adaptations to your diet, many can actively reduce their blood pressure.
I guess this is what lies at the root of GourmetGlow. Using my own personal journey and the life lessons I have learnt as a platform to help others in similar situations. I don’t just want to cook for people, I want to educate and incentivise people to go and do it for themselves. Through the services I provide, be it recipe writing, private catering or cookery demonstrations during my Vitality Series Pop Up Restaurants, I aim to give people the life tools and confidence to eat more nutritious, beneficial food.
I’m looking forward to helping you glow, inside and out!
