Untamed Summer
An ode to untamed English summers, windswept coastlines and the quiet freedom of living with the landscape.
Project challenge
Created across two distinctly British landscapes: the softness of summer woodland and wildflower meadows, and the elemental beauty of the Jurassic Coast, this project explores the many faces of an English summer.
Rather than presenting summer as something polished and perfect, the aim was to capture it as something felt.
Warm sunlight filtering through woodland. Buttercups brushing against bare skin. Linen moving through long grass. Salt caught in the air. Hair whipped wild by coastal winds. Waves breaking against ancient stone.
The challenge was to create one cohesive visual story from landscapes that initially appear to be opposites: one intimate, golden and sheltered; the other expansive, rugged and exposed.
The connection became movement, freedom and linen.
Fabric catches the breeze in both worlds, becoming almost a character within the imagery. Against soft woodland it feels romantic and ethereal; beside the sea it becomes windswept and dramatic. Throughout, the woman within the landscape is not simply posed against nature, she appears to belong to it.
The result is a story about summer beyond the postcard.
Soft and wild. Delicate and elemental. Romantic, imperfect and gloriously free.
Creative Approach
The visual language of Untamed Summer was built around movement, natural light and the emotional relationship between a woman and the landscape around her.
Rather than directing rigid poses, the imagery was allowed to unfold through action.
Running. Turning. Gathering flowers. Climbing. Sitting quietly. Letting skirts catch the wind. Reaching into the woodland canopy. Standing still while the sea moved relentlessly behind.
This created photographs that feel discovered rather than constructed, fleeting fragments of a summer adventure rather than conventional fashion portraits.
Linen was central to the storytelling. Its natural creases, softness and movement complemented the imperfect textures of rock, foliage and meadow grass, while its muted tones allowed the surrounding landscape to remain an equal part of every frame.
The styling deliberately avoided anything overly pristine. Windblown hair, muddy boots, bare feet and rumpled fabric were embraced rather than corrected.
Because this is not a story about perfection.
It is a story about feeling alive.
From Woodland to Wild Coast
The project moves between two interpretations of freedom.
Within the woodland, light becomes soft and enchanted. Golden shafts break through the canopy, catching folds of linen and creating moments that feel almost folkloric, somewhere between memory and fairytale.
There is playfulness here.
Bare feet leaving the ground.
Skirts gathered in both hands.
Branches becoming swings.
Sunlight appearing and disappearing between leaves.
Then the landscape opens.
On the Jurassic Coast, softness meets something altogether more powerful.
Ancient rock, restless water and enormous skies create a dramatic counterpoint to the delicacy of the linen. Dresses billow rather than float. Hair becomes untamed. The palette shifts from honeyed woodland warmth towards weathered stone, muted blue, sea green and silver grey.
The woman who wandered through the wildflowers now stands at the edge of the land.
The romance remains, but it has become wilder.
Approachable Elegance
At the heart of the project is the idea that beautiful imagery does not need to feel untouchable.
The linen is exquisite, but it is worn while scrambling over rocks.
The dresses are romantic, but they crease.
Hair moves with the wind rather than remaining perfectly styled.
Boots appear beneath cascading skirts.
These details were intentionally retained because they create something far more valuable than perfection, believability.
The viewer can imagine stepping into these scenes.
They can feel the rough stone beneath their boots, the warmth of the sun across their shoulders and the sudden gust of salt air catching the hem of a dress.
The result is an elevated visual world that remains human, aspirational without becoming inaccessible.
Light as Storytelling
Light became the thread connecting each landscape.
In the woodland, it was warm, fragmented and fleeting. Rather than eliminating deep shadow, I used it to create depth and mystery, allowing pools of sunlight to illuminate the subject as she moved through the trees.
In the meadow, the height of the summer sun created something brighter and more nostalgic the slightly imperfect feeling of an old photograph discovered years later.
Along the Jurassic Coast, the light became cooler and more sculptural. Open skies and reflected water created definition against the soft linen, while darker rocks provided a natural contrast that gave the imagery its painterly quality.
Rather than forcing each environment into an identical treatment, the colour grading allowed the personality of each landscape to remain.
Honeyed woodland. Buttercup gold. Weathered limestone. Storm blue. Sea green. Faded linen. Sun warmed skin.
Together, they form the palette of an untamed British summer.
Seasonal Inspiration
Untamed Summer is rooted in the fleeting nature of the English season.
There is such a small window when meadows are filled with flowers, woodland light turns golden and the coast feels almost Mediterranean between passing clouds.
That transience became part of the story.
The imagery celebrates the moments we so often try to hold onto, the first day warm enough for bare feet, flowers gathered without purpose, an unexpected afternoon by the sea, the feeling of sunlight still lingering on your skin long after returning home.
But British summer has another personality too.
It is wind.
Changing skies.
Cold water.
Salt.
Rock warmed briefly by the sun before another cloud rolls overhead.
Bringing the Jurassic Coast into the project allowed the story to celebrate this less polished side of summer, not despite its unpredictability, but because of it.
There is beauty in a season that refuses to behave.
Brand Storytelling
My approach to lifestyle and fashion storytelling begins with the world a product allows us to imagine.
For Untamed Summer, the linen pieces were never treated simply as garments to be documented. Instead, they became part of a wider narrative surrounding freedom, femininity, nature and seasonal living.
The same dress can belong beneath a woodland canopy, amongst buttercups or standing against an untamed sea.
By photographing the pieces through movement and experience, the imagery communicates qualities that cannot be shown through a conventional product image alone.
Softness. Breathability. Movement. Romance. Adventure. Freedom.
The clothing becomes associated not simply with how it looks, but with how life might feel while wearing it.
That emotional connection is at the heart of my approach to visual storytelling, creating imagery that invites the viewer to step inside a world rather than simply observe it.
The Final Story
Untamed Summer became a love letter to the beautifully contradictory nature of an English summer.
To buttercups and ancient cliffs.
To bare feet and muddy boots.
To woodland shadows and enormous skies.
To dresses caught by the breeze and hair that refuses to stay where it was put.
To the woman who can gather flowers quietly in a meadow one moment and stand laughing into the wind at the edge of the sea the next.
It is feminine without being fragile.
Romantic without being precious.
Elegant without requiring perfection.
A story of linen lived in rather than simply worn.
A celebration of the landscapes that shape us, the seasons that pass too quickly, and those fleeting days when the only sensible thing to do is follow the light, lift your skirts and run towards whatever feels wild.
The Outcome
The final collection brings together the softness of wildflower meadows, the enchantment of sun-dappled woodland and the raw beauty of the Jurassic Coast to create one cohesive story of an untamed English summer.
Rather than feeling like traditional fashion imagery, the photographs capture linen in motion and clothing being truly lived in. Dresses billow in coastal winds, move through long grass, catch shafts of woodland light and soften against ancient rock. Each environment reveals a different character within the garments while maintaining the same sense of romance, freedom and effortless femininity.
The contrast between delicate fabrics and rugged landscapes gives the imagery its emotional strength. Windblown hair, muddy boots, bare feet and naturally creased linen were embraced, allowing the finished campaign to feel luxurious without becoming polished beyond recognition.
The outcome is a versatile body of lifestyle imagery that communicates far more than the physical garments. It sells a feeling and a way of living, adventurous yet gentle, nostalgic yet contemporary, feminine yet wonderfully wild.
A collection that invites the viewer not simply to imagine wearing the clothes, but to imagine where they might take them.
